Indie Music 89 (23-29 July 2009).

Welcome to my weekly roundup of inexpensive indie(ish) musical happenings in downtown Toronto, all for $10 or less. If I'm missing something you think I should list, or you have any comments, let me know. I star (*) shows that most interest me.

Like this list? Join my Facebook group to get my weekly Toronto indie music listings. Subscribe to my weekly podcast (or download the episodes) here, or through iTunes. Or just listen to the latest one, and all the other ones, at Zygiella. Make sure to check the rest of my blog for show reviews and photos, giveaways, and downloads.

Last weekend started out folky, quickly got groovy-electro-like, moved to noise rock, and over to garage rock, then it was back to folk-pop, some more noise-jam rock, and finally ended with rock 'n' soul. How about you? This weekend and into next week I'm looking forward to lots of things, including brilliant free shows at Harbourfront.

Heyyyy...what happened to the Sunday show at the boat? That would have been awesome.

I dunno. It was happening as of early July, but now I can see no mention of it on either of the band's MySpaces, or in the show listings for the Boat. I don't know for sure that it's cancelled, but I'm assuming it is... I asked Keith Hamilton about it, but no answer yet. If it's not happening, it could be because Burning Hell got that Saturday night show with Lauren.

Maybe, sad though, I don't think I can make the Sat. (my daughter wants to see Reg. and Amy) but I was going to try for the Sun.

I met Colin (Maybe Smith) in Ottawa on July 1 though and there was something about tour dates getting cancelled.

I'll keep checking back - surely there is something going on on Sun. and if Mathias is going to be in town I can't see him canceling a show.

A Horse and His Boy's Toronto Debut has been postponed due to stolen gear... There's a special place in hell for those who steal from musicians.

Ryan Driver is on the Jon Rae Fletcher bill? Awesome!

That's terrible!!

And yes, Ryan Driver: http://stillepost.ca/boards/index.php?topic=126310.0.

As for Maybe Smith, looks like the band cancelled their east coast dates so Lauren put the Burning Hell on Saturday instead.

Thanks for listing the Calvin Johnson show at Heartbeat. I think you're the only list in town with this. He's the father of modern music.
